The global rhino population has increased for the first time in a decade, thanks to conservation efforts in Africa.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) released a report on September 22, 2023, showing that the global rhino population increased by 1% in 2022, after declining by 2% per year for the previous decade. The report attributes the increase to conservation efforts in Africa, such as anti-poaching patrols and increased habitat protection.
The IUCN report also found that the population of black rhinos increased by 3% in 2022, while the population of white rhinos increased by 1%. The population of northern white rhinos, however, remains critically endangered, with only two surviving individuals.
The IUCN welcomed the news of the rhino population rebound, but warned that conservation efforts must continue in order to ensure the long-term survival of these iconic species.
